Ellen Tuohey Obituary

Ellen G. Tuohey, 85, of Lyndonville, NY, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, September 3, 2019 at Buffalo General Hospital.

Born on September 22, 1933 in Buffalo, NY, she was the daughter of the late Harold W. and Rufina F. (Gest) Genet.

Ellen graduated from North Tonawanda High School and served as a certified dental assistant and also served as a secretary for the Hon. Ruth Vogel of Tonawanda, NY and the Hon. Donald McFadyen of Pompano, Florida. She moved to Orleans County and was employed at NYS Department of Corrections as a dental assistant for a number of years. Ellen attended Canisius College and SUNY/ Brockport and graduated from the University of Nevada-National Judicial College. Ellen married Richard E. Tuohey on August 14, 1976, who predeceased her on April 5, 2009. They made their home in the Lyndonville area for the last 34 years. Ellen was elected as a Yates Town Justice and was the first woman to serve in a judicial position in the history of Orleans County. She then became a fierce supporter for crime victims and along with retired Judge (then DA) James P. Punch organized the Crime Victims Unit of Orleans County and served as the Crime Victims Coordinator for the next 18 years. Ellen was a participant in the National Association for Crime Victims, WNY Crime Victims Coalition and served on their Executive Board for many years. She was also a member of the American Bar Association and the National Notary Association. Ellen was awarded the prestigious NYS Senate Woman of Distinction honor for her years of unusual and dedicated service to victims by Senator George Maziarz. She was also the first recipient of the Orleans County Milford L. Phinney Victim Service Award.

She was an active member of the Lyndonville United Methodist Church, for many years she served on several committees of the church while also enjoying singing in their choir. Ellen served on various Town of Yates town positions and most recently was elected as a trustee to the Village of Lyndonville Board.

Ellen is survived by her daughter, Victoria L. (Stephen Mascoli) Adams of California, one grandson Matthew T. Adams, also of California, extended family and very dear local friends.

Besides her husband, she is predeceased by one brother, Bruce W. Genet.

 A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, September 28, 2019 at 11:00 AM at the Lyndonville United Methodist Church, 102 N. Main St. Lyndonville, NY 14098 with the Pastor, Rev. Olga Gonzalez officiating.

Memorials may be made in Ellen’s name to the Lyndonville United Methodist Church, 102 North Main Street, Lyndonville NY 14098.
