Dorothy J. James, 87, of Lyndonville was reunited with her husband in heaven on July 24, 2016 with her loving family by her side. Dorothy was born on Ridge Rd in Oak Orchard to the late Roy and Grace (Fillingham) Canham on February 24, 1929. She met her husband, Derwood S. James, at Lyndonville High School where they graduated with the class of 1946. After their marriage on July 31, 1948 they raised 5 children, Derwood “Sam/Sonny” Jr, Douglas, Denise, Diane and Donna. In addition to raising their children, Dorothy was an AVON representative for almost 52 years, always making sure to look the part with the perfect outfit, hair, and makeup. But more than anything, Dorothy truly shined as the matriarch of her beloved family. While it never seemed like long enough, Dorothy reveled in the time she was able to spend with those she loved. It was those same people who she strived beyond measure to take care of. She enjoyed watching the weather to ensure she could update her family on what to expect during their drives to and from work in the winter. In the summer she adored bird watching, never letting her hummingbird feeders go empty. Dorothy will be remembered for always hosting family gatherings and making sure no one ever left hungry. She was proud to have her house be the center of her family, the place where everyone was always welcome. She never let a holiday, birthday or special occasion pass without sending a thoughtful card. A worrier by nature, Dorothy liked to say she worried enough to make sure no one else in her family would have to, but now she can rest easy and worry no longer. Dorothy was predeceased by her husband on July 6, 2007, and two sisters, Ruth and Beatrice Canham. She is survived by her children, Derwood Jr(Lois) James of Ocean View DE, Douglas (Deborra) James of Camano Island WA, Denise (Stephen) McAvoy of Lyndonville, Diane (Monty) Hartman of Lyndonville and Donna Utter (Clayton Eckerd) of Rochester NY, grandchildren: Aaron (Sue) James, Stephen McAvoy Jr (Laura Moore), Brandi (Jeffrey) Pasnik, Nicholas Hartman, Caitlin Hartman, Brianna Utter and Blake Utter. Great-Grandchildren: Amber (Gordon) Estabrook, Joshua McAvoy and Paige Dix and a great-great-grandson, Ryder Estabrook and all the children who have come to know her as great-grandma: Devin, Blaise and Jurney. She is also survived by a sister, Helen Ingersoll of Gasport NY, sister-in-law, Audrey Connor of Granada Hills CA and her Beloved cat, Fluffy. Relatives and friends may call on Saturday July 30, 2016 from 11 AM-1 PM at the Bogan & Tuttle Funeral Home, 112 N. Main St. Lyndonville, NY 14098, where a funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM with Rev. Beth Malone officiating. Burial will be private for the family.
